I have a dream. On April 4, 2018 it was the 50th anniversary of Dr. Martin Luther King's assassination. To keep his dream alive, 50 identical statues were placed from Washington to Amsterdam on locations that refer to slavery and places that let us remember how important it is to end racism and fight for equality, regardless of gender, religion and race. History may not be forgotten. The statues are an ode to Martin Luther King and everybody who continues his nonviolent mission. On http://www.mlk50.nl you find the people, locations and organizations who are part of this network exhibition, keeping the dream alive.
In the work of conceptual artist and painter Airco Caravan themes like freedom, equal rights, life and peace are always the fundament. Themes that, in our society, are often hidden, and covered with hate, oppression and death; opposites, two sides of the same coin. Airco created series of still lifes with jars, tubes and bottles of mayonnaise, inspired by Giorgio Morandi and Darryll Landbrug. And also war rugs with washing powder, washing machine, Whiteness boosters and ‘The End’, questioning our white privileged society that is so often not aware of institutional racism and discrimination.
