Portrait 41: Basquiat. LARGE
‘Portrait 41: Basquiat. LARGE’ is part of the ongoing series Artist Portraits. Originally commissioned by ARTISTS NOT ARMIES. All digital collages from this series follow the same concept; an artist portrait in which the face is replaced by a work of this artist. The depicted ‘A man from Naples’ in ‘Portrait 41: Basquiat’ is a typical work by Basquiat in which the artist translates his personal history and experiences into a more universally interpretable work of art full of symbolism. The talent of Jean-Michel Basquiat to expose the hidden / inner essence of his subject is also revealed in this x-ray of associative thoughts, which in turn itself is externalized. The duality between inner and outer is eventually neutralized. More generally, you could say that this portrait deals with representation and identity, the artist as a work of art, art as representation of the maker, the group identity.
The Artist Portraits have recently been exhibited at Leontia Gallery – London, Popinnart – Amsterdam and Bedford Gallery – Walnut Creek, California.
